Day 6

Philippians 1:24 (ESV)

[24] But to remain in the flesh is more necessary on your account.

The Joy of Selfless Service

Although Paul longs to depart and be with Christ, he recognizes that remaining in the world serves a greater good: the spiritual growth and joy of the church. This is a picture of gospel maturity—a willingness to lay aside personal comfort for the benefit of others. Joy deepens as we embrace Christ’s self-giving heart, choosing to serve when it is inconvenient or costly. It is in loving others sacrificially that we most closely reflect Jesus, who put His followers' needs before His own. True joy isn’t found in pursuing our own way, but in pouring our lives out in service. In God’s upside-down kingdom, selflessness is the path to fullness of joy.

Key Takeaway

True Christian joy grows as we lovingly serve others above ourselves.

Questions to Consider

  1. Who is God placing on your heart to serve more sacrificially?
  2. How have you experienced joy through serving others in the past?
  3. What step can you take today to prioritize someone else’s good over your own comfort?
